The year is 1647, the end of the first Civil War, a time when witch hunting was at its bloodiest peak.

 

England is a land reeling from the horrors of its internal strife, which had found brother pitted against brother.  It is a country unsure of its own destiny.  The defeated King, although imprisoned, still remains a threat to both stability and peace, while at the same time the new ruling Parliamentarians are at odds with their own army.

 

Matthew Hopkins, the infamous, “Witchfinder General” and his assistant John Stearne are conducting the interrogation and examination of nine people accused of the “felonious act of witchcraft” in the remote fenland town of Kings Lynn.

 

It is here that an old family mystery comes to his attention. A secret destined to have far reaching consequences for himself and the future of the Nation.

Who can he trust? Who is telling the truth?  Should he trust the desperate men and women from the fens awaiting their judgement, or the men who control the destiny of the realm? Perhaps the answer lies in the hands of Matthew’s old friend, John Thurloe.
